Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

I loved Crescent City as a whole but especially House of Earth and Blood, the first book. I think the book had a well-thought-out plot that included some twists and turns. I appreciated how Maas treated trauma in this book. It was addressed really well in a different way than in A Court of Silver Flames. I also believe that this series blended the fairy aspects and tales with advanced technology and magic in a modern way. 

Sarah J. Maas writes bad-ass heroines, but Bryce Quinlan might take the cake. Bryce is a twenty-something attending college with her best friend, Danika. One night, everything changes, and Bryce is unsure of what to do. As she continues to live, Bryce meets Hunt Athalar, who is a Fallen Angel. 

I recommend this to anyone who is a fantasy fan and loves hilarious banter, and badass heroines.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

 I read the famous Shadow and Bone series and, honestly, it was disappointing. I had previously watched the show so I had some basic information about the Grishaverse.  Let us begin with the characters. Alina is meant to be this poor, orphaned girl who discovers her power years too late. Instead, she feels like she is written as someone who seeks validation from others. While this might be more realistic to how a teenager would react, it is not very fun to read and is annoying. This is totally fine to start but as the story goes on, you would expect to have some character growth and for her to become more independent. However, it feels like she grows more and more dependent on Mal and even sometimes Nikolai. I liked Nikolai as both the captain and the prince because I felt like he had this cavalier attitude that was funny and made it fun to read. The Life Impossible by Matt Haig

The Life Impossible by Matt Haig is one of the best books I have read this year. It was about a student who grew up and emailed one of his favorite teachers about a hard time in his life. The teacher wrote back with an entire book attached to her email. The teacher, Grace Winters, was a retired math teacher from the US who inherited a house in Ibiza. When she travels to Ibiza, she is immediately introduced to the mysteries that had caused the death of her friend. She meets many different people, one of whom is a scuba diver, Alberto. Alberto knew her friend and was hiding something from Grace. This leads to many adventures and new information. At the end of the story, we see more emails from the student, which I thought was a really nice touch. I really liked the entire system of magic that Matt Haig established.
